Noah,

Small Groups are most prevalent in youth groups that have 100+ members. When the group gets that big it becomes difficult to have in-depth intimate discussions on matters of faith, so many have found the addition of small group time to be beneficial to giving kids a chance to share and discuss in smaller numbers. Also, small groups are used to give youth a system of accountability to others. Most small groups are led by adult volunteers although it is not uncommon for older senior high students to lead younger students but I am not sure how effective that is.

I am sure there are a lot more people on here that can give you their experience with having small groups as part of their youth ministry.

Small groups are effective, IMO, in any youth group regardless of number. Obviously if you only have 4 students, though, you already have your small group.

But if you have more than 12-15 kids, you should probably begin to implement small groups.
